AMoYT Artist Spotlight: Brian Lopez

August 4th, 2023

Brian is a photographer based in San Francisco. He started photography in 2000 while in high school. With a Canon Ae-1 as a hand-me-down from his Mom, he learned the foundational skills of exposure and dark room developing. As he introduced himself to the technical and creative aspects of photography, it became clear that it was a passion worth pursuing.

A few years later, the slow but certain cultural shift from film to digital photography emerged. He was heavily resistant at first, as one of his favorite elements of film photography, the darkroom, was being replaced by computer post-processing.

After careful consideration, he embraced the emergent digital techniques. His first digital camera was a Fujifilm XT10, which he used for years. He still shoots with Fujifilm and has since upgraded to an XT-2. Nevertheless, he still makes time for film and believes that embracing both styles has made him a better photographer.

Concerts and live events are most often where Brian can be found. With an eye for details, he is passionate about capturing raw and emotive performers - often with the challenging but rewarding technique of dual exposure.

When he's not shooting concerts, Brian loves to travel and explore new places. He finds inspiration in different environments and landscapes, which effortlessly translates into his work. He recently debuted work from a trip to Mexico in another publication.

Brian’s work radiates tone. His work is felt as much as it is seen. Live music is an art form in itself, but Brian is able to convey the effort, skill, and craft involved. This, of course, is because Brian possesses effort, skill, and craft.
